The safest progression is not “buy every rod.” Use the free Starter, buy only upgrades that solve your current catch limit, then compare quest and late-game options in the live build.
Direct route
Community-reported cash path: Starter Rod → Plastic Rod → Carbon Rod → Ether Rod → Gold Rod → Samurai’s Katana → Luna Eclipse → Atlas’ Hand.
This is not an official fixed progression. Names and ordering come from a June community tier list; verify availability, price, and current stats on the in-game card before purchase.
When to skip a step
Official: the game loop combines catching rare fish, cooking and serving them, and upgrading both rods and the stall. A rod purchase competes with restaurant progression for the same play session.
Skip a listed cash rod when your current gear reliably lands the fish needed for the next meaningful unlock. Do not buy solely because a third-party tier label says it is higher.
Quest and premium branches
Community reports list Bamboo, Shark Hunter, Sakura Rod, Moontuna Rod, and Leviathan Spine Rod as quest unlocks. They also list some Robux or creator-only rods.
Unknown: current quest prerequisites and premium prices were not confirmed by an official public table. Treat every branch as a live in-game check, not a promise.
Choose by bottleneck
Community references compare Luck, Speed, and Weight Capacity. Use Weight Capacity when a target cannot be landed, Speed when catches are too slow, and Luck only when reliability is already adequate.
Because balance can change during beta, the “best” rod is the cheapest available option that removes the actual bottleneck in your present route.
